Missouri Highway Worker Killed Along I-55

Earlier this week, a 31-year-old highway construction worker was killed in a truck accident. KSDK 5 News stated that the accident occurred at approximately 10:45 a.m. Monday in the southbound lanes of I-55.
Reports indicate that the worker was picking up signs along the interstate when a dump truck that was backing up in a closed lane struck him. The driver of the truck didn’t realize what had happened and continue to back up over the injured worker, who died at the scene.
A spokesman for the Missouri Highway Patrol, Sgt. Al Nothum, stated that while a team of investigators for the department will look into the incident, no criminal charges are expected to be filed against the driver of the dump truck; however, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration may be called to examine if the accident could have been prevented.
In an effort to prevent any similar accidents in the coming week with increased traffic due to the Fourth of July holiday, law enforcement across the state is said to be preparing for a crackdown on speeders in construction zones. Drivers in the state could be fined an extra $250 if caught speeding in a work zone and up to $10,000 for hitting or killing a highway worker.
